Though I'm an academic librarian, formal requirements to publish are not part of my official job description or duties. However, I enjoy writing, and seek any way to improve my writing by just doing it.
I've had some great writing mentors to help me. Helen Rogers, a library colleague at UH-Hilo, was instrumental in turning my writing around after I arrived in 1991. With her handy red pen, critical but friendly and well-meaning, she showed me how to avoid absurdity and redundancy. What I once wrote as eight sentences I can now write in three well-crafted ones.
Ken Rehg, my thesis advisor, showed me ways I could improve my academic writing on Satawalese. Ken's academic style is simply stellar. Clear, matter-of-fact, and concise. It was a pleasure to work with him.
