The READ Collection idea was originally developed by KCC Librarians Mary Marko and Shirley Vashishta. Other librarians in the UH System including Ellen Okuma, Distance and Outreach Librarian at Hawaiʻi Community College on the Island of Hawaiʻi, adopted the idea and made the READ collection available on their campuses.
The primary purpose of the READ Collection is to have a separate location of selected books available in the library that be easily found by students in first year college reading classes.
Many of the titles in the READ Collection are fiction by classic writers such as Mark Twain, Jack London, Rudyard Kipling, Willa Cather, and John Steinbeck. Works by contemporary authors like Barbara Kingsolver, Stephen King, Victor Villasenor, Toni Morrison, J. K. Rowling, and Amy Tan can also be found here. Some young adult literature was chosen for inclusion because universal themes in this genre appeal to some of our younger students.
Selected Nonfiction titles have been included in addition to biographies, myths, poetry and short stories.
