LILO Projects: Make & Activate

6 modules guide you through the research and writing process:

The Research Process — what it is, why it's important, and how it works;
Your Assignment — figure out what your instructor expects of you;
Research Strategy — select a topic and refine it to a thesis statement;
Conduct the Search — choose appropriate databases, construct searches, and retrieve results;
Evaluate — how to select relevant and appropriate sources to support your thesis statement;
Synthesis — the ethics of writing, how to avoid plagiarism, how to integrate search results with your own ideas, and how to properly cite sources.

LILO developers have focused on providing the research and evaluation basics you need in as few words as possible. Review the content of each module, and apply what you have learned to complete your assignment. Programs such as the Assignment Calculator and the Citation Builder help you learn how to plan your work and create citations for your sources. You'll learn how to use these in the following pages. The text also contains hyperlinks to many examples to help you along.

The LILO Research Journal feature enables students to better understand the research process by recording important information about their topics during the various steps of the process. [The Journal feature is more effective if you have a specific research topic in mind.] Journal content allows instructors and librarians to review a student's progress and offer advice when needed. Answers can be revised and saved to your Journal as often as you wish, and easily viewed by pressing the "View Journal" link on the top menu bar.

You may also email your research journal contents to yourself, your instructor, and others. If you have connected to LILO as a Guest, you must create an account to use the Research Journal feature. If you are a UH student, faculty or staff member entering through the UH blue portal, an account has been automatically created.
