PCM 23: Pre-College Mathematics

Course Description

PCM 23, Pre-College Mathematics is a non-credit mathematics course designed for students who must acquire fundamental skills to advance to community college mathematics courses.

Students taking PCM 23 will review the basic arithmetic skills: operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percents. Other topics include: ratio and proportion, measurement, and signed numbers. Study skills, time management, note taking, test preparation, and anxiety-reduction are emphasized.

Supervised collaborative work groups, progress-monitoring, counseling, and computer-assisted instruction will be major components of the class. See detailed objectives.

FreeRice: Basic Math - Ten levels of problems, from basic addition to fractions, decimals, and exponents. This website raises money for the UN World Food Program.

Khan Academy - Starts with basic arithmetic, allowing advancement only after a specified number of problems in a row have been answered without error. Over 75 total lessons, continuing all the way up into introductory calculus topics.This site requires an e-mail address for registration.


Online Texts and Tutorials

Pre-Algebra Demystified: A Self-Teaching Guide - Integers, fractions, decimals, percents, basic equations, ratios, informal geometry, measurement, graphing, introduction to monomials and polynomials. Many examples, practice problems, and end-of-chapter quizzes, all with answers provided.

Schaum's Outlines: Review of Elementary Mathematics, 2nd Ed. - Arithmetic, fractions, decimals, percents, signed numbers, basic equations, ratios, introductory geometry. Includes practice problems, although the answers are generally given on the same page.

Bob Miller's Basic Math and Pre-Algebra for the Clueless - Arithmetic, fractions, decimals, basic equations, graphing points & lines, percentages, ratios, basic geometry, beginning trigonometry, preview of statistics and probability. Plenty of examples, but no real practice problems.

Cliffs Quick Review: Basic Math and Pre-Algebra - Whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, signed numbers, exponents, measurement, graphs, probability, series, basic equations.

Super Review: Basic Math & Pre-Algebra - Integers, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion, percents, exponents. Includes some introductory algebra and geometry. Features concise exposition, with the primary focus on step-by-step solutions to numerous example problems.
