Library Resources - Library Collections

Library Collections

The library collects materials to meet the needs of the college’s curriculum. There are approximately 75,000 titles of books and periodicals held in KCC Library, divided among the following collections.

General Collection
Contains books in all subject areas arranged by Library of Congress Classification System. Includes Oversize section at the end.
Location: Throughout the Second Floor.

Reference Collection
Contains ready reference (organized information) books in all subject areas arranged by Library of Congress Classification System. Includes Oversize section at the end. For library use only.
Location: End of the First Floor.

Periodical Collection (Paper)
Contains over 200 journals, magazines, and newspapers in many subject areas. Arranged by title in alphabetical order. For library use only.
Location: Current year periodicals are located near the Reference Desk. 4 years of back issues are stored behind the Circulation Desk.

Microform Collection
Contains New York Times, Honolulu Advertiser, and Honolulu Star Bulletin on microfilm since 1980. Also contains selected discontinued magazines on microfilm such as Time, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, and National Geographic since 1965.
Location: In the metal cabinets outside the First Floor group study rooms (Lama 114 A & B).

Reserve Collection
Contains materials reserved by instructors for students to use. Check Hawaii Voyager Online Catalog by instructor or course for availability.
Location: Behind the Circulation Desk.

Hawaiian Collection
Contains books on Hawaiian studies. Open Stacks located on the first floor behind the Reference Desk. Hawaiian Reference and Hawaiian Special Collection books need to be paged at the Circulation Desk. Most have two-week loan period.
Location:  Behind the (Paged Collection) Circulation Desk and (Open Stacks) Reference Desk

Japan Collection
Contains popular books donated by the Japan Forum and Japan Foundation. The majority of them are in Japanese while some in English.
Location: Second Floor outside the Char Room.

Char Collection
Contains over 800 books on Chinese studies, in Chinese or English. For Char room use only.
Location: In the Char Room on the Second Floor.

Asia Collection
Contains scholarly books in Asian languages, including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
Location: Second Floor of the library adjacent to the Japan Collection.

Read Collection
Contains selected classical and contemporary works of fiction and non-fiction. Books in this collection are popular with students learning English as a second language.
Location: Second Floor, near the top of the main stairs, outside Lama 201.

Video Collection
Contains selected educational videos for viewing in the library. KCC Videos are being cataloged now and some are now listed in Hawaii Voyager.  Empty DVD cases are located behind the reference desk. Ask for the printed listing of the complete collection at the Circulation Desk.
Location: Behind the Circulation Desk.
