After receiving feedback from students, seven new SOS Workshops have been added to this semester's program.
Secret of Success (SOS) Workshops are free for all KCC students and are designed to help you get better grades and get through your academic year.
One of the new classes, "Healthy Relationships and Campus Safety," teaches students how to foster and maintain positive relationships in their lives and make smart dating decisions.
It will be held on Oct. 20 and 22 in Lama. (See box below.)
"This class may be particularly helpful for international students who might not be familiar with Hawaii's culture and customs," said Veronica Ogata, a staff member of KCC's Violence Prevention Task Force who will lead the workshop.
"The Peer Education Group will discuss healthy and unhealthy relationships, dating tips, and how to dress appropriately," Ogata said.
The other two classes new to the SOS roster deal with proper referencing for research papers.
One focuses on APA, the other on MLA. (See box on page 5.)
"All students should really attend these workshops," said Joy Oehlers, the workshop instructor. "Especially if you plan to attend to Manoa, you're going to need to know these formats."
Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and Excel workshops have also been added to this year's schedule.
These courses will be held on Nov. 3, 10, and 16 in Lama. (See box.)
In addition to the Microsoft workshops, Arnie Reyes will be teaching an Email 101 Basics workshop.
Including the seven new classes, there are 34 different workshops being offered this semester. Among them, SOS coordinator Guy Inaba recommends students sign up for Taking Notes (Sept. 10) and Microsoft Word 2007 Basics (Nov. 3).
"Of the skills that you use in college these two are really needed to be successful," said Guy Inaba.
After taking a workshop, attendees are asked to fill out a quick survey describing their experience, as well as recommend changes and suggest new workshops SOS can provide for KCC students.
These surveys play a big part in determining what workshops will be added.
"I would recommend the workshops to other students," said Suandi Tanuwijanto, a newly admitted marketing student at KCC who has recently taken "How to Survive an Online Course." "And the survey took about 10 minutes to complete."
